the meaning

born among dogfeet and
railroad tracks
born among corned beef
hash

born among faces
uglier than anything
life   has
devised

born to see the 7
horse break its
leg
at 3:42 in the
afternoon

born into another
split–
clothes gone from
closet,
bits of hairpin
lotions
rings
left
behind

born to dance on
one leg

born to sit around
and watch flies
and roaches

born to cut fingers
on the edges of
tuna cans

born to go about
with your guts
completely shot out
from front to
back

born to open
peanutbutter
jars.

I want to bring all of Bukowski's poems online and make then freely available. This means hundreds of hours of work to retype over 1,000 of his poems from the original manuscripts. Your donations will help support this work.
