I tried solitude for a long
time
but the walls closed in
against the sides of my
brain
and I jumped out of
solitude
into fighting mean sons of
bitchs in alleys
the gravel shuffling
underfoot, learning the
value of a left
jab and the counter-
punch
but
it was a useless
means
even when it
paid
off.

I tried women and
actually
the women helped the
most.
they arrived and
departed and
arrived
again–
different shoes
different dresses
different stories
different colored lips
various lengths of hair
earrings or no
and always
along with them
their worst and most-
often mis-used
word:
love.

well, waiting on the
grave does pose some
problems.
