my critics are sometimes right

I have lived with many women
and looking back now
from this pleasant distance
I realize that most of them
had a grand central statement
which they repeated over and
over again:
“you drink too much.”
and most of them had what we
might a call a secondary or sub-
statement
which was:
“you never do
anything.”
(they meant here
that
I never liked to
watch tv, go to movies,
parties, picnics, weddings,
parades, and so forth…)

but with the last
woman (who was a drinker)
her grand central statement
altered into:
“that bitch wants to fuck
you.”

her secondary or sub-statement
was:   “you’re not interested
in anything but
yourself.”

which could be
true.

and although we no longer
live together
we still see each other
and she still manages to
say
in reference to various
occurences and
happenstances:
“that bitch wants to fuck
you.”

which could also be
true
but I tend
more toward the secondary or
sub-statements of the
ladies
past:

“you never do
anything…”

I want to bring all of Bukowski's poems online and make then freely available. This means hundreds of hours of work to retype over 1,000 of his poems from the original manuscripts. Your donations will help support this work.
