it’s all right

small cheap rooms where you have to walk to the
bathroom may even have a feeling of romance when
you are a young drunk writer but
many things do:   even the rejection slips seem
ridiculous for you are sure that
you are
one of the best

and sitting there pouring the wine and looking
over at the portable
you are really
in a sense
insane

waiting one more night to
type down the immortal words–now
just thinking about it and drinking your first
drink
on your first night in a strange city

looking over at the door
almost
expecting a most beautiful woman to walk in
and do most wonderful things
to you.

being young
helps get you through
many senseless
days.

being old
does
too.
