bombed away

when I was much younger
when we were all much younger
one of T.S. Eliot’s most famous
lines
was:
“this is the way the world
ends,
not with a bang,
but with a
whimper.”

before Hiroshima
we all wished we had written that
line.

poor T.S. had
much of his immortality
taken away
by a monstrous scientific
technicality

but he had it for a
while

and like the old fight
Beau Jack said
after blowing his fortune on
parties, suckerfish and
women:

“it beats not ever having
it…”

so, T.S., now we just have
to say
we don’t know how
or
when.

anyhow, under the circumstances,
immortality seems
outmoded

and now
most of us
rather whimper
before the
end.
