a startling sight

today at the racetrack
3 or 4 rows ahead of me
all I can see is this young fellow in a blue
t-shirt
and a green cap.
the race is about to begin
and he is talking to an old
fellow
who is standing there holding
binoculars.
I can’t hear their voices.
then I see the young fellow
reach up and grab the visor of
his cap.

ah, I think, he’s going to twist it
about and wear the visor
at the back
the way jerk-offs
do, you know, those ultra-
extroverts.
but he fools me.
he twists the visor of his cap
around to the side
down over his left
ear.

a new one.

what a fucking man.

he is talking rapidly
to the man with the
binoculars.

then the horses spring from the
gate
and I am saved from the nonsense of
watching less become
less
in a world that needs so much
more
so fast,
the hooves dig into the earth
as beauty
returns.
